Director of CRESMAO Attends Official Presentation Ceremony of Code of Practice on Women, Peace, and Security in Maritime Sector
The Director of CRESMAO recently attended the official presentation ceremony of the Code of Practice on Women, Peace, and Security in the maritime sector to State Action at Sea authorities and the entire maritime community of Côte d'Ivoire. The ceremony, held at Palm Club Hotel Cocody, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire on June 20, 2024, was organized by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Teshie, Ghana, with the support of the Permanent Secretary of the Interministerial Committee of State Action at Sea (SEPCIM-AEM) Côte d'Ivoire. Mr. Abroulaye Fofana, the Permanent Secretary, was represented by Colonel Kouadio Aké José Nicole, Director of Administration and Legal Affairs.
The Code, developed and presented by the KAIPTC under the Danish Maritime Security Stabilization Fund Program, focuses on addressing the critical gender gap in the maritime security sector in West and Central Africa. This initiative is part of the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), emphasizing "Participation, Protection, Prevention, and Relief." The presentation extended these pillars to maritime governance, safety, and security, highlighting the essential role women can play in bridging the gap between policy and practice in maritime security and governance. It underscores the rights and well-being of women within maritime communities.
The presentation underscored the vital importance of the maritime domain to the economic, social, and cultural well-being of West and Central Africa, which faces challenges such as piracy, illegal fishing, and environmental degradation that disproportionately affect coastal communities and maritime security professionals, particularly women.
